A calmer alternative to eFax

eFax details verified July 8, 2026 from public pricing and legal pages. Plans change - confirm current details on the vendor's site.

eFax is the biggest name in online fax, and for a pharmacy or clinic it comes with real fine print: a BAA only from the $39.99/mo Business tier up, pages billed by transmission time, and company-issued numbers that its own customer agreement says will not be ported to you. FaxRx was built for healthcare from day one - BAA on every plan, plain per-page billing, and your number stays yours.

FaxRx and eFax, side by side

FaxRx
eFax
Monthly price
$15/mo (300 pages), $39/mo (1,000 pages), or $99/mo (3,000 pages). Month to month, no annual lock-in.
Personal $18.99/mo (200 pages), Business $39.99/mo (500 pages); eFax Protect HIPAA tiers start at $49.99/mo (500 pages) as of July 2026. First-month teaser rates rise sharply after month one.
Pages included
300 / 1,000 / 3,000 outbound pages per month. Receiving is unmetered - inbound faxes never draw on your page balance.
200-9,000 pages depending on plan and lineup; some legacy plans split send and receive into separate buckets. Unused pages do not roll over.
Extra pages
$0.08-$0.05 per extra page, prepaid in small credit packs you choose to buy. No surprise overage bill, no per-minute rounding.
$0.10/page (Personal) or $0.07/page (Business), billed via prepaid $10 blocks that are forfeited after 6 months idle or on cancellation. The Protect overage rate is not published by the vendor.
BAA / HIPAA posture
BAA signed electronically during onboarding, on every plan, before any document touches the platform.
BAA available on eFax Business and eFax Protect. No BAA is offered on the Personal, Plus, or Pro plans as of July 2026 - and the terms prohibit storing PHI without one.
Number porting
Free number porting on Professional and Enterprise (typically 5-10 days). Your number stays yours - port in and port out freely.
eFax-issued numbers cannot be ported out: the eFax Customer Agreement (sec. 2a) states numbers "remain the exclusive property of the Company and will not be ported to You." Only a number you originally ported in can leave.
Contract terms
Monthly billing. Cancel anytime; paid credit packs never expire.
Annual plans are prepaid and non-refundable; monthly plans have no partial-month refunds. Failed or busy transmissions can still bill.

What pharmacies and clinics notice

The 60-second page rule

eFax bills each page as the greater of actual pages or 60-second transmission increments - their own example shows a 66-second single page billed as 2 pages. FaxRx bills the page count, period.

Your number is not yours

An eFax-issued number stays eFax property under their customer agreement. If you build your pharmacy workflow on it, leaving means reprinting letterhead and re-notifying every prescriber. FaxRx numbers port in and out freely.

The BAA lives upstairs

Marketing says "HIPAA compliant," but a signed BAA starts at Business ($39.99/mo) or Protect ($49.99/mo) as of July 2026. FaxRx signs a BAA during onboarding on every plan, including the $15 Starter.

Pages expire, prepay blocks forfeit

Unused eFax pages vanish every 30 days, and prepaid overage balances are forfeited after 6 months of inactivity or when you cancel. FaxRx credit packs you purchase never expire.

Bringing your number over

If your current number was issued by eFax, their customer agreement says it will not be ported to you - so the practical move is picking a new FaxRx number and updating your letterhead once. If you originally ported your own number INTO eFax, you can port it out to FaxRx for free on Professional and Enterprise (typically 5-10 days, we handle the paperwork).

Questions pharmacies ask

Can I move my eFax number to FaxRx?

If the number was originally yours (you ported it into eFax), yes - porting to FaxRx is free on Professional and Enterprise and typically takes 5-10 days. If eFax issued the number, their customer agreement states it stays their property and will not be ported to you; we will set you up with a new number instead.

Does FaxRx sign a BAA on the cheapest plan?

Yes. Every FaxRx plan includes a Business Associate Agreement, signed electronically during onboarding before any document touches the platform. There is no premium tier gate for the BAA.

How does FaxRx billing differ from eFax?

FaxRx counts pages, not transmission seconds. Plans include a monthly page allowance, and extra pages come from prepaid credit packs you choose to buy - packs never expire, and there is no surprise overage invoice.

Is FaxRx cheaper than eFax for a pharmacy?

For a BAA-eligible setup as of July 2026: eFax starts at $39.99/mo (Business, 500 pages). FaxRx Starter is $15/mo with 300 pages and a BAA included; Professional is $39/mo with 1,000 pages and free porting. Confirm current eFax pricing on their site - plans change.
